C.V.

(If you just want the simple facts, please skip this poetical rambling & go down the page.)

One of the things about being an artist is that I often rewrite my C.V. Well, if this C.V. were to be told in a way that feels natural to me, then it would go something like this.

'Glover's Island' 1993. Adam Cope.

I was born in the south of England & remember staring into the clear water streams in Hampshire. They still sparkle & flow in my mind's eye. I decided to become 'a painter' early on. The painter's métier has since given form & colour to my life. It pleases me - the paints, the brushes, the slow making of a painting... I enjoy just looking at things; it seems to me more than ever that eyesight is an incredible thing.

'Tourette' Watercolour. 2003. Adam Cope

About seventeen years ago, I started teaching. This was a real revelation to me, that learning can be just as creative as painting a masterpiece. Something about collaboration. I've worked in wide range of educational settings, and now particularly enjoy running residential painting courses, as they bring together an interesting spectrum of people with a mutual passion for painting. Also, they're good fun, having something of 'the holiday spirit'.

'La Vallée de Bergerac' Oil. 2002. Adam Cope

The southwest of France was the place of happy childhood holidays for me. Sunny fields full of scents & warmth. Then came the long summers of inspirational painting jaunts. Theni I married a french girl from Bergerac, had children & settled here in 1998. Been here ever since.

"And even if everything were to turn out the exact opposite of what I imagine, no malice could ever obscure the glory of having kindled this endeavour nor dim the light that has been sparked by this adventure . " Don Quixote

Ideally, I would like my paintings themselves to be my CV. You can see a selection on my home page: Adam Cope - Paintings of France
